Sophomore Year Guide for College Student-Athletes

By AthleteFi·June 16, 2026

How to make the most of your sophomore year — developing your role, deepening your relationships, and building toward future seasons.

You Know the System — Now Use It

By sophomore year, you understand how your program operates. You know the coaches' expectations, the team culture, and the academic demands of college athletics. Sophomore year is when you stop surviving the transition and start thriving in it.

Expand Your Role

If you spent freshman year learning the system from a limited role, sophomore year is when you compete for more. Study what the players ahead of you do well and work to close those gaps. Talk to your position coach about what specifically you need to improve to earn more playing time. Then go do it.

Build Leadership Within the Team

Sophomore athletes occupy an important position on any team — experienced enough to lead by example, young enough to stay connected to incoming freshmen. Be the teammate who makes new athletes feel welcome and helps them navigate the transition you just completed.

Take Your Academics Seriously

Sophomore year is when many student-athletes begin their major coursework in earnest. Do not coast on the habits that got you through freshman year — college academics intensify as you progress. Build relationships with professors in your department and begin thinking about careers and internships in your field.

Evaluate Your Future in the Program

Halfway through your freshman year, you have enough information to honestly evaluate whether this program is the right fit for your athletic and personal development. If serious concerns exist — about playing time, coaching fit, or program culture — sophomore year is the right time to explore your options, including the transfer portal.

Use the Off-Season

The best college athletes treat the off-season as a competitive advantage. Use voluntary workouts, individual skill development sessions, and film study to arrive at the start of next season noticeably better than when you left it. The gap between freshman and sophomore year is often when athletes make their biggest improvement.
