Junior Year Guide for College Student-Athletes

By AthleteFi·June 16, 2026

Junior year in college athletics — stepping into a leadership role, maximizing playing time, and planning for life after sports.

Junior Year: The Leadership Year

Junior year is when the best college student-athletes transition from contributors to leaders. You have the experience to lead, the standing to influence team culture, and the urgency that comes with knowing your college career is more than halfway complete. Use this year to its fullest.

Step Into Leadership

Whether you are a team captain or not, juniors lead by example. Be the athlete who arrives early, stays late, and gives maximum effort in every practice. Model the standards your team needs. Invest in your younger teammates. Leadership is not a title — it is a pattern of behavior.

Have an Honest Performance Conversation With Your Coach

Schedule a meeting with your position coach and head coach to discuss your development, your role, and their vision for your senior year. This conversation helps you understand what you need to do to maximize your impact in your final season and demonstrates the seriousness of purpose that coaches respect.

Begin Planning for Life After Athletics

Junior year is the right time to start planning your post-athletic career in earnest. Pursue internships in your field of interest. Build your LinkedIn profile. Attend career fairs and alumni networking events. The professional habits you build now — before the urgency of senior year — give you a significant head start.

Manage Your Academic Progress

At the end of junior year, ensure you are on track to graduate in four years. Count your credits. Confirm that you have completed all major requirements or have a clear plan to do so. Avoid the common mistake of delaying difficult major requirements until senior year when athletic and graduation pressures converge.

Evaluate a Potential Fifth Year

Some student-athletes have a fifth year of eligibility due to injury, COVID relief, or redshirt status. If you have eligibility remaining, junior year is when you decide whether a fifth year makes sense athletically, academically, and financially. Discuss it openly with your coaches before your senior year begins.
