The Recruiting Timeline
College recruiting is not a single event — it is a multi-year process with distinct phases. Understanding the timeline helps you take the right action at the right time and avoid both rushing and falling behind.
Phase 1: Preparation (Freshman and Sophomore Year)
Build your athletic skills, maintain strong grades, and begin researching programs. Create your recruiting profile and highlight video. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center by the end of sophomore year. Identify 30 to 40 programs across all levels that interest you.
Phase 2: Outreach (Sophomore and Junior Year)
Send your first round of emails to coaches. Include your profile, video link, and academic information. Attend showcases and camps at target schools. Follow up consistently — coaches evaluate persistence and genuine interest alongside athletic ability.
Phase 3: Evaluation (Junior Year)
Coaches begin evaluating you seriously. You may receive questionnaires, unofficial visit invitations, or direct contact. Respond promptly and professionally. This is the period when many scholarship offers are extended in high-profile sports.
Phase 4: Official Visits and Decision
Official visits are paid by the school and give you the deepest look at a program. You are allowed up to five official visits at Division I schools. Use each visit to evaluate academics, team culture, facilities, and your relationship with the coaching staff.
Phase 5: National Signing Day
You sign a National Letter of Intent (NLI) committing to a school. This is a binding agreement — you commit to the school and the school commits to scholarship funding for one year. Read the NLI carefully and consult an advisor if anything is unclear.
Key Rules to Know
NCAA contact rules restrict when and how coaches can contact athletes by age and division. Recruiting yourself — sending emails, attending camps, and creating a Hudl profile — is always allowed regardless of your grade. Know the rules for your target division so you are never caught off guard.
