Building Your Relationship With Your College Coach

By AthleteFi·June 16, 2026

How to build genuine relationships with college coaches during the recruiting process — and why it matters more than you think.

Why the Coach Relationship Is Everything

Your relationship with your college coach will shape your entire athletic career. The coach you sign with determines your development, your playing time, your team culture, and your experience as a student-athlete. Evaluating the coach — not just the program — is the most important decision in the recruiting process.

Start With Genuine Interest

When you contact a coach, do your homework first. Know the program's recent results, the coach's background, and specific things about the team that genuinely appeal to you. Coaches can immediately tell the difference between a form email sent to 100 programs and a thoughtful message from an athlete who actually knows their program.

Communicate Professionally

Every email and phone call is an audition. Use proper spelling and grammar. Address coaches by their title and last name until they invite you to use their first name. Respond promptly. Be concise. Show enthusiasm without desperation. Every communication either builds or undermines the coach's confidence in you.

Ask the Right Questions

On visits and calls, ask substantive questions: How do you develop athletes at my position? What does the off-season training program look like? What academic support is available for athletes? How have your coaching responsibilities changed recently? The quality of your questions tells a coach a great deal about your maturity and seriousness.

Evaluate Honestly During Visits

A campus visit gives you a chance to observe the coach in their element. Watch how they interact with current players. Talk to players without coaches present and ask what the culture is really like. Pay attention to your gut — the relationship that looks perfect on paper but feels wrong in person usually is.

Maintain the Relationship After You Commit

Once you commit, continue to communicate with your future coaching staff. Update them on your senior season performance. Ask what you can do to prepare for your arrival. The athletes who arrive on campus with established relationships with their coaches have a significant head start.
