The Origins of Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee was invented in 1968 by a group of high school students at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey — including Joel Silver, who later became a Hollywood producer. They drew inspiration from the existing Frisbee disc toy and elements of football and basketball. The first college game was played between Princeton and Rutgers in 1972.

The sport grew organically through universities and countercultural communities who were drawn to its non-contact, cooperative ethos. The USA Ultimate organization was founded in 1979. Today, the World Flying Disc Federation governs the sport across more than 80 nations, and the annual World Ultimate Club Championship draws hundreds of club teams from across the globe.

How Ultimate Frisbee Works

Two teams of seven compete on a rectangular field with end zones at each end. The disc begins with a throw-off (similar to a kickoff), and teams advance by passing the disc through the air toward the opposing end zone. Catching the disc in the end zone scores a point.

No running with the disc: Once caught, the player with the disc — called the thrower or handler — must plant one foot as a pivot and has ten seconds to make their next pass. Dropping the disc or failing to complete a pass results in a turnover.

The Spirit of the Game: Ultimate is one of the only sports at any competitive level that relies on self-officiating. Players call their own fouls, out-of-bounds, and violations — even at the highest club and international levels. Spirit awards at major tournaments are as coveted as trophies.

Notable Ultimate Frisbee Players and Teams

Beau Kittredge (USA): Widely considered the greatest handler in the history of the sport. A devastating combination of throwing range, athleticism, and leadership with the San Francisco Revolver club.

San Francisco Fury: The dominant force in women's club ultimate — multiple National Championship and World Championship winners, renowned for setting the standard of play in the women's game.

Team USA Mixed: Gold medalists at multiple World Games appearances, showcasing the sport's unique mixed-gender format at the highest international level.
