The Origins of Netball

Netball grew out of basketball in the 1890s. When James Naismith's new game crossed the Atlantic, physical education teacher Martina Bergman-Österberg adapted it for women in England, removing dribbling, limiting player movement, and raising the basket on a post with no backboard. By 1960, the International Federation of Netball Associations was founded, and the sport had taken root across the British Commonwealth.

Today, netball's heartland stretches across Australia, New Zealand, England, Jamaica, and South Africa. The Netball World Cup, held every four years, and the international Suncorp Super Netball league in Australia have turned it into one of the most-watched women's sports on the planet.

How Netball Works

Two teams of seven compete on a rectangular court divided into thirds. Each player is assigned a position with a strictly defined zone — no roaming the entire court. The goal shooter and goal attack are the only players allowed to score, and they must shoot from inside the shooting circle without a backboard to guide them.

The no-dribbling rule is what makes netball unique. Once you receive the ball, you have three seconds to pass it and must keep one foot planted as a pivot. Defending requires marking within a metre of the ball-carrier — contact is not allowed. Every possession becomes a rapid-fire sequence of decisions, demanding exceptional spatial awareness and chemistry between teammates.

Notable Netball Athletes

Irene van Dyk (South Africa/New Zealand): Regarded as one of the greatest goal shooters in history. She represented both South Africa and New Zealand over a career spanning four decades.

Liz Ellis (Australia): One of Australia's most celebrated defenders and a World Cup winner who became a vocal ambassador for the sport after her playing days.

Jhaniele Fowler (Jamaica/Australia): Towering goal shooter with extraordinary shooting accuracy — frequently finishing seasons at above 95% conversion rates in the Super Netball league.
